# 7 Mistakes You're Making with Food Allergies at All-Inclusive Resorts (and How to Fix Them) Vibrant tropical fruit breakfast and safe pastry at a luxury Caribbean resort

Hello there, fellow traveller! 🌴 If you or a loved one lives with severe food allergies, the idea of an All-Inclusive resort can feel like a dream and a bit of a challenge all at once. You want the sun, the sand, and the relaxation, but the thought of a cross-contaminated buffet or a language barrier in the kitchen can keep you up at night.

I’m Lisa Dunne, CTC, and as a dedicated All Inclusive Resort Specialist, I’ve spent years helping families and couples navigate the world of travel with confidence. My passion is turning your travel dreams into seamless, authentic, and safe experiences. I believe everyone deserves a vacation where the only thing you’re "all-in" on is fun: not stress!

Managing food allergies at a resort takes a bit more than just "hoping for the best." Today, I’m sharing the seven most common mistakes I see travellers make and, more importantly, how we can fix them together to ensure your next getaway is truly unforgettable.

🌟 1. Assuming "All-Inclusive" Means "All Safe"

It’s easy to think that because a resort is five-star or part of a major chain, they automatically have iron-clad allergy protocols. While many do, the reality is that "all-inclusive" refers to the billing, not necessarily a universal standard for dietary safety. Every property, even within the same brand, can have different management, different staff training, and different kitchen setups.

The Fix: Don’t assume: verify! As your All Inclusive Resort Specialist, I work hard to match the perfect resort to your specific needs. I look for properties that have established, transparent protocols for handling severe allergies. We want a resort that doesn’t just say "we can handle it," but one that can explain how they handle it.

🌟 2. Playing "Buffet Roulette"

We all love the variety of a massive resort buffet, but for someone with a life-threatening allergy, the buffet is often the highest-risk zone. Cross-contact is rampant: spoons get moved from one dish to another, and crumbs can travel. Even if a dish looks safe, you can't be sure what happened two minutes before you arrived.

The Fix: Skip the self-serve lines. When I help my clients plan their stays, I encourage them to speak with the restaurant manager immediately upon arrival. Most high-quality resorts will gladly have the chef prepare a fresh, safe meal in the back kitchen, away from the buffet area, specifically for you. This "made-to-order" approach is the gold standard for safety.

🌟 3. Skipping the "Pre-Trip Interview"

Many travellers wait until they are standing at the check-in desk to mention their allergies for the first time. By then, the kitchen has already placed its orders for the week, and the staff is in the middle of a busy shift.

The Fix: Start the conversation early. I recommend reaching out to the resort’s Food & Beverage Manager at least two to four weeks before you depart. As your Certified Travel Counsellor, I often facilitate these connections to ensure your file is flagged long before you touch down in paradise. We ask the tough questions: How is staff trained? Is there a dedicated allergy kitchen? What are the protocols for cross-contact? This transparency is key to your peace of mind.

🌟 4. Relying Solely on the "Note" in Your Reservation

You might see "Peanut Allergy" noted on your confirmation, but that doesn't mean every server at every snack bar has seen it. Resorts are busy places with hundreds of employees working in shifts. A note in a computer system is a great start, but it isn't a guarantee that the person handing you a cocktail or a taco knows your needs.

The Fix: Be your own best advocate at every single meal. Re-state your allergies to your server every time you sit down. A great tip is to carry professionally printed Allergy Translation Cards in the local language (like Spanish or French). These cards clearly state your allergens and the necessity of avoiding cross-contact, ensuring nothing is "lost in translation."

🌟 5. Forgetting the "Hidden" Allergens in Tropical Drinks

When we think about food allergies, we often focus on the plate. However, at Sun Destinations, the bar can be just as risky. Almond syrups, coconut milk, and even shared blenders used for various fruity concoctions can pose a significant threat.

The Fix: Treat the bar like a restaurant. Ask to see the bottles of syrups and mixers. If you have a severe nut or dairy allergy, request that the bartender use a freshly washed shaker or blender specifically for your drink. Most staff members are happy to accommodate when they understand the seriousness of the request.

🌟 6. Leaving Your "Lifeline" in the Resort Room

It’s tempting to head down to the pool with just a towel and a book, leaving your epinephrine auto-injectors and medications in the room safe. But an allergic reaction doesn't wait for you to walk back to the fourth floor and wait for the elevator.

The Fix: Your life-saving medication must be with you at all times: at the beach, by the pool, and during excursions. I always advise my clients to invest in a small, insulated, waterproof pouch that can keep your injectors at a safe temperature while you enjoy the sun. It’s a small habit that makes a world of difference for your safety.

🌟 7. Neglecting the "Travel Day" Hunger Gap

The journey to your resort is just as important as the stay itself. Relying on airport food or "allergy-friendly" airline meals can be risky. Delays happen, and the last thing you want is to be stuck on a tarmac with no safe food options for hours.

The Fix: Pack a "Safe Meal Kit." Include enough non-perishable, high-protein snacks to last you 24 hours. Think of it as your travel insurance for your stomach! This ensures you arrive at your resort feeling energized and ready to start your vacation, rather than stressed and hungry.
